Originally founded in 2004 and then based in Alnwick, Northumberland, One Life Racing is a British Triathlon – sanctioned team dedicated to helping North East cyclists & triathletes. One Life is affiliated to: Triathlon England; Cycling Time Trials & British Cycling. The club has also achieved the following approvals:
- Starmark – For Senior Triathlon accredited clubs
- Clubmark – accessibility mark
- Disabled Inclusive Club – approval
In 2006 the club relocated it’s base to Hexham in order to widen it’s catchment area. In Jan 2009 the club has 160 active members and has it’s base at the state of the art facilities of Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham.
What is particularly pleasing is the number of families which are involved in the club. One Life Kids has over 80 juniors. The club has a really strong committee which has a development plan to make sure it continues to grow in a sustainable way and develop links with local communities. This objective is well supported by NCL who run many sporting facilities in the North east including the Wentworth Leisure Centre.
The club has members that include novices looking for support before completing their first triathlon, to veterans of Iron man competition. The club now has members who are World Champions, National champions, regional champion, National team members, National relay champions, and enthusiastic “doing-it-for-fun” participants.
The club is run by the members; they organize all the activities, social events, and workouts. Workouts are geared to multi-sport athletes of all abilities. One Life has one of the most varied and well supported programmes of coached training sessions;
- 3 weekly swimming sessions
- Senior running session
- Junior running session
- Junior run/bike session
- 3 weekly Senior group bike ride
These training sessions are supported by the energetic coaching staff which include; 2 level 3 coaches, 1 level 2 and 3 level 3 staff. Plans are in hand to expand that even further to support the club’s development objectives and the aspirations of the competing members.
The club organises the annual Northumberland Triathlon Festival which is on 21st June 2009 and after the 2008 cancellation hopes are high for a competitive Standard Distance Triathlon which is now a nationally recognised event
The following weekend the club is also holding its 2nd Children’s Triathlon in Haltwhistle. The first event last year demonstrated the club’s commitment to providing the highest quality triathlon experience for juniors at all levels.
One Life is definitely not an elite club, it’s a club for families, children, parents and anybody who is interested in a fantastic sport and that is why it has developed the membership that it has.
